No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
